School year in Japan

Tea ceremonies, graceful gardens and tranquil temples along with high-speed trains, striking efficiency and hyper-modern skyscrapers are essential to the dynamic Japanese culture.

We look forward to welcoming participants from all countries. In this program you will be hosted by a local family, who will show you the community, make you feel comfortable and help you make friends. You will be enrolled at the 10th, 11th, or 12th year, depending on your current academic level. Moreover, you will be in a frequent contact with AFS volunteers, who will assist you anytime you need. The volunteers want you to adapt well to your new reality, so they will prepare some interesting activities during your many orientations.

Partial scholarship available: USD 3300 instead of USD 5920 

Note: school related extra cost up to $1400 might be added such as uniform, books, and optional school trips

Eligibility Requirements

  • Born between 2 Apr 2009 to 1 Apr 2012
  • Good level of English.
  • Japanese A1 No specific level of Japanese is required upon arrival, however, students are strongly recommend to study Japanese before they start AFS program in Japan. They are also recommended to read and write Hiragana and Katakana upon arrival.
